Discord
The main channel for communication during this event is Discord, where people can write, talk through voice channels or share live gameplay videos.
Creating a Discord account is free through Discord.com, but most likely a lot of your students already have their own dicsord users. You can choose if everyone should make a new user for this specific event, or if student can use their own users.
You can use Discord as a standalone app, or directly in your browser. We do reccommend downloading and using the app, but in some cases some networks (specially school networks) will block services like Discord – in those cases the browser version of Discord is a good substitute. To do this you press the «Open Discord» button (or «Login» if you are not logged in yet) at the top right corner of the front page of https://discord.com/
You can join the Discord server for the event through this link: https://discord.gg/wmsQVev4W6
Teachers are free to join the server already to test that everything is working as intend, but please do not distribute this link to the students until closer to the event. You are free to join the server if you have technical questions you want us to help you with.
The vieo below walks you through the steps of joining our Discord-server
Minecraft
For this event the participating schools have a choice between using a commercial license of Minecraft (Java/Bedrock edition), and play together with other schools in our servers, or a Minecraft Education Edition, where you play locally but are able to upload your creations to us after the event.
Minecraft Java/Bedrock
With a commercial edition of Minecraft (Java/Bedrock) you will be able to join our joint server, and build together with participants from other schools/countries.
Necessary equipment, software and licenses:
A pc/mac/chromebook, or other device that can run Minecraft (mobile, iPad, gaming console)
- Minecraft is a game with low hardware requirements, and can be run on most desktop computers or laptops that run Windows, MacOs or ChromeOs. To check compatibility, see the official requirements for Mac/PC and Chromebook.
- Pcs that are set up for work/school may block you from downloading/installing external software like Minecraft Java/Bedrock – please test this as soon as possible so issues can be resolved before the event.
- Minecraft can also be run on mobile devices (Android, iPhone – click links to see requirements), and the gaming consoles Playstation 4/5, Xbox One/Series and Nintendo Switch.
- For gaming consoles, you will also need an active subscription to the respective consoles service for online gaming; Nintendo Switch Online, Playstation Plus or Xbox Game Pass.
A Microsoft account for each player that will play online. This can be created for free.
A commercial version of Minecraft Java/Bedrock Edition for each student/teacher who is going to be playing.
- For pc this would be a Microsoft Account that owns Minecraft (not the Education Edition). We do have a few Microsoft accounts you can borrow for this event, but not nearly enough for full classes to connect at once.
- A good compromise is to let the students log on with their own Microsoft accounts that have Minecraft, and supplement with some borrowed accounts from us.
- Alternatively you can divide the class into groups that take turns building.
An internet connection that lets you play online
- Some schools/workplaces have networks that will block connected devices from using online services like playing Minecraft online. We recommend to test this a good time in advance of the event, so you have time to ask your it-department for options if the network is blocking the game.
Connecting to the server
The server is named AToTC (short for A Tale of Three Cities), and is currently hosed on Minehut. The server addresses will then be:
For Minecraft Java edition (pc/mac only): atotc.minehut.gg
For Minecraft Bedrock edition (every other device): atotc.bedrock.minehut.gg
Please do not distribute this address to the students before close to the event (preferably the same day)– The server is currently offline and being worked on, but we will have to open it periodically to test things – and would prefer to not have students joining us.
If you want to test logging on to the server, we have made a test server that will be open 24/7:
testatotc.minehut.gg (Java) or testatotc.bedrock.minehut.gg (bedrock).
Connecting to the server with PC/Mac (Java Edition)
Open the game
Choose Multiplayer
Choose Direct Connect
Type the address atotc.minehut.com, and press Join Server
The vieo below walks you through the steps of joining our server with Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac only)
Connecting with PC/Mac/Chromebook or mobile deviced (Bedrock Edition)
Open the game
Log into your Microsoft Account (button on the lower left of the screen, next to the bell icon)
Choose Play
Go to the Servers tab
Choose Add Server at the bottom of the list, and
- Choose any server name
- The serveraddress should be atotc.bedrock.minehut.gg
- Port should be 19132
- Press Save
Now you can choose the server in the list, and connect to it.
The video below walks you through the steps of joining our server with Minecraft Bedrock Edition (PC, Mac, Chromebook, iOs, Android, gaming consoles). This is done on a pc, but it should look similar on most devices (but smaller on mobile screens, etc).
Logging on to the test server
You may have noticed that both vieos above are connecting to TestAToTC instead of AToTC (i.e testatotc.minehut.gg (Java) or testatotc.bedrock.minehut.gg (bedrock). This is a test server we have made that only exists for you to check if your login is working properly.
In the building/room where you are planning on joining the event, while connected to the internet connection you are planning to use, start the device/s you are planning on playing on, and follow the recipe above to connect to the server.
If you arrive in a world that looks like the image below (the weather may be different when you join – as you can see, it is raining in the videos), then you are good. You have successfully logged on to our test server – and will be able to join the main one when we open it).
If you arrive at a server that looks like the image below, you either wrote the wrong server name (or in some rare cases; our test-server is down). Check your spelling (testatotc.minehut.gg or testatotc.bedrock.minehut.gg) and try again.
Either way, if you arrive at any of the above screens, you have succsessfully connected to the server provider we are using – and will be able to join the event server (atotc.minehut.gg (Java) or atotc.bedrock.minehut.gg (bedrock)) when we make it public.
Minecraft Education Edition
Some schools have Minecraft Education edition already available. Schools that use Microsoft software and services will most likely either have access to Minecaft Education already, or have options to buy a discounted license for it. Minecraft Educations Editions has the advantages of being cheaper for schools, and will already be available and compatible with most school networks.
Minecraft Education Edition is not compatible with playing on online servers, and will not be able to join the server where the event is taking place. Therefore we have made an alternative for schools choosing this edition.
If you are going to use Minecraft Education Edition, we will provide you with a copy of the game world we use in our server, that you can download and import into you local game – and play together with your class locally.
After the event is over, we ask you to save and export the world you have been building, and send it to us. We will then be able to extract the buildings you have built, and import them to our server. A guide to importing and exporting game worlds in Minecraft Education can be found here.

Importing a world into Minecraft Education:
Exporting a world from Minecraft Education:
Be warned that not all buildings will be able to import to our servers. Special tools and blocks that are only available to Minecraft Education Edition will not be transferred, since they are not compatible with the commercial versions of the game (Java/Bedrock). In most cases these will be replaced with «air» when transferred to our servers, but in some cases heavy use of these blocks/tools will make the building.
When we import buildings into our server, we will have to place them where there is room. Other schools may have built something in the same space as you. In these cases we will place them in the nearest available location.
If students make buildings that are hidden from our sight (underground, behind trees/mountains, underground, etc) we may not be able to see the building while we transfer them to our servers. In those cases they may not be part of the transfer.
